About Zanshin Archery
Zanshin Archery offers specialist archery coaching for neurodivergent young people in Hampshire, UK. Our approach combines traditional archery skills with Zen philosophy and breathwork to create a unique, supportive learning experience. All sessions are delivered by Lee Greenwood, an accredited Archery GB instructor with years of experience working with young people.
What is Zanshin?
Zanshin is a Japanese term from martial arts meaning “remaining mind” or “lingering awareness”. It describes the state of relaxed alertness that continues after an action is completed. In archery, zanshin is the stillness and focus that remains after the arrow has been released.
This concept is at the heart of our coaching philosophy: we teach not just the technical skills of archery, but also the mental discipline and mindful awareness that make it a powerful tool for personal development.
Our Approach
Archery Skills
We teach traditional archery techniques in a structured, patient manner. Breaking down each element of the shot sequence allows learners to build confidence progressively, at their own pace.
Zen Philosophy
Drawing on Zen principles, we emphasise presence, acceptance, and the journey over the destination. Archery becomes a moving meditation, where the process matters as much as hitting the target.
Breathwork
Conscious breathing is fundamental to good archery and emotional regulation. We integrate breathwork techniques to help young people manage anxiety, improve focus, and develop self-calming strategies they can use in everyday life.
Why Archery for Neurodivergent Young People?
Archery offers unique benefits:
- Clear structure and routine - Each shot follows the same sequence, providing predictability
- Individual focus - No team pressure; progress is personal
- Sensory regulation - The physical act of drawing a bow provides proprioceptive feedback
- Mindfulness in action - Natural opportunity to practise focus and present-moment awareness
- Tangible achievement - Visible progress builds confidence and self-esteem
We offer dedicated coaching pages for young people with ADHD and autistic young people, each covering how archery specifically supports those experiences.
